Can I Have A Jib Crane On A Mezzanine Floor?

December 10, 2024

Jib cranes are ideal when there is a need to lift heavy loads, including in open or confined spaces of the building.

While the typical installation of a jib crane involves the use of ground floor space, there may also be a need to incorporate lifting facilities into a mezzanine floor.

After all, a mezzanine level can make excellent use of what would otherwise be redundant space in your building. However, the question remains whether it is possible to have a jib crane on a mezzanine floor.

Metreel is a leading supplier of jib cranes and we can help determine the best crane type for your needs when you contact us.

Until then, here are some of the main factors to consider if you want to install a jib crane on a mezzanine level.

Structural Feasibility

One of the crucial elements which will determine whether your mezzanine jib crane installation can go ahead is if the structure can safely support the jib crane in addition to any loads imposed by the jib crane.

However, given jib cranes are available in a range of capacities, this also creates some flexibility if a heavier crane were to exceed safe loads. For instance, Metreel jib cranes can offer lifting capacities between 125kg and 1,000 kg (SWL). As a result, the weight of the crane can differ depending on which end of the scale is required.

Should the mezzanine not be able to withstand the weight of a jib crane and its potential loads, then another option is to retrofit the floor to provide additional structural support.

As part of this, there should also be a consideration of the dynamic forces that are exerted when loads are moved along with deflection limits.

Required Clearance

At Metreel, our jib cranes can provide an arm rotation of up to 270°.

The mezzanine space must allow for easy clearance of not just the crane itself, but also the load being carried. If there are any obstructions, then installing a jib crane will not be safely possible.

While height clearance is not as easy to contend with on a mezzanine floor, it may be possible to relocate the jib crane if clearance around the crane would be the issue.

Otherwise, it’s good to know that our jib cranes can be mounted to the floor or wall, which again may provide some additional options to ensure a safe level of clearance is possible.
