Types Of Festoon Systems

June 25, 2024

Festoon systems offer a simple and effective method of cable management and can be seen in various industrial settings, particularly where there is any type of moving equipment such as cranes, hoists or automated machinery.

Getting its name from the shape made when the cables are suspended between two points, a festoon cable provides an insulated jacket to protect all of the cables held within it. The festoon cable is then looped over the trolleys and as the hoist moves backwards and forwards across the crane beam, power is supplied to the machine.

Various types of festoon systems exist and each can be customised depending on the application needs and overall operational requirements.

Metreel is a leading UK supplier of festoon systems, meaning we can help you select a tailored festoon type to suit the needs of your business.

In the meantime, here is a general overview of the different types of festoon systems to guide you.

C-Rail Cable

C-rail cable systems are available in a variety of coatings including zinc and stainless steel, with special customisations also available for environments where explosions are likely. Alongside crane production, C-rail cable systems are typically used in transport and engineering applications.

C-Track Festoon System

Boasting excellent longevity, C-track festoon systems are geared towards rugged industrial environments. Typically, C-track festoon systems are made from stainless steel to offer resistance against rust and corrosion.

Heavy-Duty Festoon System

As the name suggests, heavy-duty festoon systems are designed for intensive applications along with repetitive use. Available with single and double trolleys, heavy-duty festoon systems are easy to assemble offering convenience in abundance for a variety of application types.

I-Beam Cable Festoon System

Geared towards challenging environments such as ship-to-shore cranes, factories and material mills, I-beam cable festoon systems can be pre-assembled offering a quicker installation. I-beam festoons can be highly customised, while also providing the advantage of being easy to maintain. In addition, I-beam festoon systems also have a relatively low cost in terms of the return on investment they can generate.

Track-Mounted Cable Festoon System

In environments exposed to dust, dirt or corrosive materials, track-mounted cable festoon systems are also ideal for high temperatures, or settings which require an explosive-proof design. Along with being robust and easy to install, track-mounted cable festoon systems offer excellent cable management, including where there is a need to carry wires or hoses to power or control circuits.

Square Rail Festoon System

Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications, square rail festoon systems can be configured to run on straight, curved or circular tracks. As a result, this festoon system type is ideal for monorail cranes.
