What’s The Difference Between A Crane And A Jib Crane?

November 28, 2024

When in search of a crane to increase lifting capacity for your operations, there are many different types to choose from.

One such example is a jib crane, which gets its name from its arm design (also known as a jib) which can be attached to a vertical mast or wall bracket.

Metreel is a leading supplier of workstation cranes, including jib cranes.

Here is a brief overview of the functions that general cranes perform and the nuances that make jib cranes slightly different to other cranes.

Cranes: An Overview

A crane is a term that is used broadly to describe a metal structure that is designed to lift, lower or reposition heavy loads. Since manual lifting has weight limits to prevent the risk of injury, a crane is used to offer far greater lifting capacity in a way that is also more efficient.

The main components found on a crane include:

  • Base
  • Boom
  • Brake
  • Chain
  • Control system
  • Counterweights
  • Hoist
  • Hook
  • Jib
  • Load moment indicator
  • Mast
  • Motor
  • Rotating mechanism
  • Safety latch
  • Track or rail system
  • Travel mechanism
  • Trolley
  • Wire rope

The exact components and their overall capabilities will depend on the crane type. Lots of crane types exist to cater to the various lifting requirements, including the type of environments where a crane may be needed.

Some cranes are also portable, such as portable gantry cranes. Using a mobile crane is ideal where there is a need to frequently move the crane across the same site or to transport the crane to different locations.

What Are Jib Cranes?

Jib cranes have an arm which can rotate from 180° to 360° (up to 270° for Metreel jib cranes).

Ideal for working in compact areas, the arm of a jib crane supports a hoist, with the jib crane itself capable of being mounted on the wall or floor.

Often, jib cranes are used to perform repetitive overhead lifting tasks where precise load control is required.

Choosing a jib crane is ideal when:

  • The load is light to medium (up to 1,000kgs for Metreel jib cranes)
  • The task requires repetitive and precise material handling
  • There is a need to lift within a fixed area
  • Space is at a premium meaning a compact lifting solution is needed
  • Cost-effectiveness is important

Did you know?: At Metreel, our jib cranes can be used in conjunction with material handling accessories including festoons and hoist trolleys.
