Which overhead system is best for your business?
Searching for a reliable overhead mechanical handling system can be laborious. Choosing the right system is the difference between a streamlined workflow and costly downtime. With a range of options available on the market, it is easy to feel overwhelmed.
The two most trusted systems are workstation bridge cranes and jib cranes. Both offer distinct advantages, including expansion of operational capacity and increased productivity and efficiency. But which is the right fit for your workspace and operational goals?
The differences in ability, features, and installation options will determine which is best for your application, giving you the confidence to make an informed decision.
Key differences
The Met-Track® workstation bridge and jib cranes accommodate various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and warehousing.
The Met-Track® workstation bridge crane provides effortless and reliable overhead lifting and handling of goods using bridges and lifting devices. The ergonomic design allows the crane to move seamlessly, ensuring the operator’s comfort is a priority, effectively reducing user fatigue. The crane offers a precise lift and requires only 1% of the load force to manoeuvre, making it three times easier than traditional workstation cranes.
The Met-Track® workstation jib crane features a horizontal arm, known as a jib, which supports a lifting device, such as a hoist. The arm rotation and trolley travel move smoothly for comfortable and easy movement.
Depending on the mounting and bracing options, the jib crane can accommodate an arm rotation range from 270 degrees to 360 degrees, offering precise control with minimal effort.
Size comparison
Jib cranes are significantly smaller in terms of size, and coupled with the rotational arm, they are ideal for compact workspace areas. Despite the arm rotation, the jib crane is static and can only manoeuvre goods within a small radius.
The workstation bridge crane covers an extensive floor space, allowing the operator to transport goods within its footprint. If the crane has a telescopic bridge, additional movement can occur outside the footprint range, offering vast coverage.
Capacity range
The Met-Track® workstation bridge crane can support loads of up to 2000kg. In addition to the load capacity, the crane is customisable with options such as bridge lengths, runway supports, and mixed capacity systems.
However, the safe working load (SWL) of jib cranes depends on whether the crane is overbraced or underbraced.
An overbraced jib crane has a safe working load of 125kg to 1000kg, spans up to six metres and has an arm rotation of 270 degrees. An underbraced crane has a safe working load between 125kg to 500kg, spans up to four metres and has an arm rotation of 360 degrees.
Installation methods
Floor-mounted jib cranes are anchored in your facility’s foundation and are suitable for indoor and outdoor environments. Whereas, wall-mounted jib cranes are installed directly into the structure of your facility. They are perfect for areas with limited access or heavy foot traffic. However, it is crucial to consult professionals before installation to maintain your facility’s structural integrity.
A floor-mounted workstation crane offers efficient overhead handling without being a permanent installation. This design allows for easy extension, relocation, or removal as your business evolves.
On the other hand, a ceiling-mounted workstation crane is installed in the structure of the building. This setup works well in tight spaces or locations where accessing equipment is challenging; however, it cannot be moved or expanded. The installation will require seeking advice and obtaining permission from the relevant authorities.
How to choose the right crane for your business?
Before purchasing a workstation crane or jib crane, it is crucial to understand the task requirements the crane will perform. This knowledge will help determine the best location, installation method, maximum lifting capacity, key features and customisations.
If you require a ceiling-mounted workstation bridge crane or a wall-mounted jib crane, it is critical to contact the correct authorities to avoid costly mistakes and legal battles.
