Aggregate Supplier – Multiconductor

Replacing the conductor system for the operator of Europes biggest limestone quarry.

Project Description

One of Europe’s largest limestone quarries can generate as much as eight million tonnes of limestone aggregate annually. In the UK, most of this stone is distributed by rail, utilising specially constructed branch lines connected to the central rail network. The transportation of aggregate is via a conveyor to a tripper car, which loads the material into train trucks; thus, having a fully operational tripper car is crucial for the business.

Previously, the tripper car was powered by an ageing open conductor bar. It regularly failed due to the sprung pantograph-style collectors slipping from the conductor, along with general dust and dirt build-up.

The unreliable power supply was affecting their business, and the client knew they needed Metreel to source a sustainable solution.

AKAPP Multiconductor Continuous Copper Conductor System

from Metreel
Solution

Initially, the client enquired about a cable reeling drum system. However, given the 276 metres of travel required, this option was deemed unsuitable due to several factors, including the dusty environment and the UK climate.

Metreel recommended replacing the old, failing conductor with an enclosed AKAPP multiconductor system. The AKAPP multiconductor® operates on collector trolleys inside the housing of the conductor bar.

The multiconductor system was installed at waist level, with a finger-safe extension for additional safety and rubber strips to prevent dust from entering the conductor housing.

Minimising downtime and disruption to production, Metreel installed the new conductor system during a bank holiday shutdown, enabling operations to excel upon the client’s return.
