Mobile Gantry Cranes FAQs

We’ve answered some of our top customer queries about gantries below.

For anything else, or to place an order for a Metreel gantry crane, please call 0115 932 7010.

What Is A Gantry Crane?

A gantry crane is a lifting system on legs, featuring a transverse beam that extends across the supports. Attached to the transverse beam is a lifting device that will aid in lifting and moving materials.

Our range of gantry cranes can be customised to meet your needs. This means you can select the lifting capacity, size and the type of hoist or lifting device attached.

If you are new to material handling or looking to procure a gantry crane for your business, we’ve put together this handy gantry crane buying guide. We hope you’ll find the information useful.

What Is A Gantry Crane Used For?

Gantry cranes are used to lift and move heavy loads across a defined area using a horizontal beam supported by legs that run on wheels or rails.

As a freestanding crane, gantry cranes are ideal for both indoor and outdoor environments such as warehouses, workshops, shipyards and construction sites.

They are commonly used for tasks like loading and unloading large materials, moving machinery and handling bulky items that would be difficult or unsafe to lift manually. In turn, using a gantry crane helps improve efficiency, safety and productivity in industrial operations.

Why Should I Choose A Portable Gantry Crane?

Gantry cranes are an excellent choice for anyone seeking a mobile and portable crane solution. If you are travelling to a job site or have limited space in your workshop, then a gantry crane is perfect. They offer the same lifting abilities as a permanent mechanical handling system, but with the added convenience and flexibility you need.

Unsure whether a gantry crane is the best fit for your lifting needs? At Metreel, we specialise in a variety of crane types besides gantry cranes. Please take a look around our website or get in touch to discover our full range of solutions.

How Is A Mobile Gantry Crane Made?

We can’t speak on behalf of other gantry crane manufacturers, but here at Metreel, our mobile gantries are constructed from welded sections, forming a durable A-frame structure, with a transverse beam for stability.

Fitted with 360° swivel locking castors for manoeuvrability, and safe working loads (SWL) ranging from 500kg to 2000kg, they make an excellent choice for various handling tasks.

If you are in search of any specific details about our mobile gantries to ensure suitability with your application, our team would be happy to assist you further.

How To Operate A Gantry Crane

To operate a mobile gantry crane, start by checking that the crane is on a stable, level surface and that the load does not exceed its rated capacity.

The crane operator can then move the crane slowly and steadily along its wheels or casters to the desired location.

Secure the load properly using appropriate slings or hooks, then use the crane’s manual, electric or hydraulic controls to lift it safely.

When operating a gantry crane, always keep the path clear, maintain full visibility of the load and follow all safety guidelines to protect both personnel and equipment during operation. During operation, it is vital to avoid sudden stops or sharp turns to prevent swinging.

At Metreel, we always recommend consulting the health and safety advice applicable to your country or region before undertaking any lifting task. This includes ensuring that crane operators have received the proper training before using any lifting equipment, including a mobile crane.

How Much Does A Gantry Crane Cost?

Metreel gantry cranes are designed, built and installed with the specific lifting needs of your business in mind. Since every gantry crane project is different, it’s not possible for us to give you a fixed price here.

However, if you complete our ‘request a quote’ form on this page, or call us on 0115 932 7010, we’d be happy to provide you with a cost estimate based on your requirements.

With gantry cranes available to suit small to heavy duty applications, our gantries cater to varying budgets.
